Sheep Go To School

The Festival team reaches out annually in partnership with the local 4-H club for the “Sheep Go To School” program.  A local rancher goes into the 4th grade classrooms of five public and private schools in Blaine County during the time in their curriculum when the children are studying Idaho history to teach them about the stories, joys and struggles of sheep ranching life in rural Idaho. There is also a brief lesson on Range Science and the Rest Rotation practice of managing fire fuel loads and maintaining healthy forage for wildlife, sheep and cattle.

Over 200 children are reached through this program each year. Some of these children live on sheep ranches, some have relatives who raise sheep today, and many have extended family members who came from around the world to Idaho to raise sheep.

This year, we hope to partner with the local senior center for a rancher to make a presentation to their clients about sheep, ranching and to share stories.
