Norwegian Skinfell entails stitching and wood block printing on tanned sheep skins.
Traditionally used for warm bedding on a cold winter night, Skinnfell traps (blankets)
were made from multiple hides that were carefully stitched together and then decorated
with motifs meant to convey good wishes to the receiver. In this introductory class we
will design and print sheepskin into a pair of warm and wooly wrist warmers. In addition
to wood block printing, students will learn how to stitch seams and edges. Hand
strength is needed for this - small jewelry pliers help. All materials are included but
students are asked to bring a measuring tape, small sharp scissors and eyeglasses if
needed. Also very useful is a leather thimble and a jewelry plier.

Cost: $170.00
Skill: Beginners, ages 12 and older.

People who are passionate about either fiber or their own fiber animals often feel the
pull to start making their own yarns. Spinning wheels are an elegant and versatile tool
for this purpose. Regardless of the wheel’s size or appearance, its purpose is to add
twist to fiber to make it into yarn. Watching a spinner turn a handful of fluff into a strong
yarn is akin to watching a magical transformation, and it’s very alluring to want to learn
this art. Participants in this class will learn the basics of spinning yarns on their own
wheels. We will start with a brief discussion of wool fiber characteristics and practice
drafting. We will then move into learning about spinning wheel mechanics. We will
combine the two skills of drafting and managing the movements of the spinning wheel to
make some single yarns. We will end the class by creating some beautiful plied yarns
and discuss finishing techniques.

Sylvia has 2 wheels available for use at $10 each. Please contact her directly at
spinnersthreads@gmail.com to arrange this. Otherwise, students need to provide a
sound wheel, orifice hook, 2-3 empty bobbins and a lazy kate (can be made with knitting
needles run through a shoebox).

Sylvia Smith is a fiber artist with a focus on handspinning. She has been spinning for
30 years and recently earned her certification as a Master Spinner from Olds College.
She’s very active in her local Guild and the Montana Association of Weavers and
